About
HFHWC is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

Our Core Values

All people living in Whitley county are worthy of decent and affordable housing, regardless of race, creed or gender.

A substantial number of Whitley County families°¶ lack decent and/or affordable housing.

Families lacking decent and/or affordable housing are detrimental to the long-term well being of the community.

Lack of decent and/or affordable housing is detrimental to a family°¶s long-term well being.

Affordable housing costs (PITI {Principal, interest, and taxes, insurance}) should not exceed 30% of a family°¶s gross monthly income.

Homeownership is proven beneficial to the stability of the family and the education potential of children vs. renting.

Families will not benefit long-term by being °ßgiven°® a house; they need to be part of acquiring it to retain dignity.

HfHWC does not °ßgive°® families housing -- we work in partnership with those in need of housing to help them obtain it.

HfHWC partner families repay the actual cost of home construction (no interest), w/payments based on their income.

HfHWC extends a °ßhand up°® to another human being by helping them out of the °ßsink hole°® of problem housing:

Before they are buried in debt by the cost burden of unaffordable housing.

Before they are homeless because decent and affordable housing is unavailable or out of reach.

Before their children, become lost in the public school system due to constant moving through temporary housing.

Before desperation tempts a family member to become involved in criminal activity, in an attempt to make fast money to avoid eviction and keep the utilities connected.

Before the living conditions of leaky doors, windows and poor insulation causes them to use an unsafe heater or other appliance that catches fire, creates unsafe conditions, or produces carbon monoxide.

Before the poor living conditions cause irreversible health complications, mentally, physically and emotionally.

HfHWC is a vehicle to honor God by doing good with and for, those in our own local community as a priority, and by our tithe, we honor God by doing good throughout the world.
