About
HFH Kelowna is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

News
February 2008 -- our thanks go out to the Interior Savings Credit Union and the generous credit union members who donated through the ISCU Member Rewards program. Thank you for your community support.

March 2008 -- Thank you to OK Builders Supplies, Kelowna Ready-Mix, for their generous donation of concrete for our build site. Thanks as well to Bulldog Concrete Finishing for donating some of the labour for the job.

April 2008 -- Thank you to BC Safety Products for their donation of a new first aid kit for our worksite.

April 2008 -- Wow! Thank you to the wonderful volunteers from Terasen and Fortis who spent a sunny Saturday with our partner families, assembling and staining a fence and building two porches at our eight plex site. Terasen has also generously donated $30,000, two furnaces and two stoves to HFHK. What a great team effort. Thank you to All Kinds of Fences for leading the volunteer crew and to Mayor Sharon Shepherd for dropping by.

May 2008 -- Habitat for Humanity Kelowna was the sponsored charity at the gala opening of three luxury show homes at Diamond View Estates on the Westside of Okanagan Lake. The developers hosted a special preview for invited guests on Saturday, May 3rd, with excellent food and drink, and featured a silent auction for Habitat for Humanity Kelowna.

On Sunday, the three show homes were open to the public and the silent auction continued throughout the day. We wish to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude Paul Yu of Diamond View Estates for hosting this event and to all the donors of silent auction items.

June 2008 -- Thanks to the Central Okanagan Foundation for giving us a grant to buy new office equipment and a projector which will enable us to make Power Point presentations. Habitat volunteers are willing to speak to companies, service groups and other potential donors about the work we do here in Kelowna.

June 2008 -- Thanks to The Home Depot Canada our Vernon Chapter was the recipient of a $2,200 grant for their "Kids Habitat Playhouse of Dreams".

On June 7th "Team Depot" joined the Vernon Habitat volunteers to assemble the Playhouse of Dreams. The spirit and enthusiasm was not dampened by the rain which fell right up to the moment the playhouse was complete. The Home Depot associates had many laughs as they finished off the interior. When the sun finally came out "Team Depot" even had a tea party on the deck of the playhouse to see if it was satisfactory for the children. We are glad to say everything passed with flying colours.

July 2008 -- Kelowna Habitat for Humanity is pleased to announce that we are the recipient of a $45,000 grant from the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia. The monies were awarded for our current duplex project in Rutland. The mission of the Real Estate Foundation is to support sustainable real estate and land use practices for the benefit of British Columbians. The board of the Real Estate Foundation wrote that they were "impressed with the incorporation of environmentally friendly products and technologies in the design of the buildings and overall complex."

August 2008 -- Thank you to TELUS for their generous donation through their Dollars for Dollars program, which matches employee and retiree donations.

August 2008 -- We thank the Provincial Employees Community Services Fund for their support of Habitat for Humanity. We appreciate their generous donation.

August 2008 -- We thank Paradigm Mortgage Corporation for their ongoing support of our affiliate.

We are always looking for volunteers. There are many non-construction volunteer positions, such as serving on the Board of Directors, fundraising, or liaison with our partner families.

Habitat for Humanity Kelowna's next challenge is to acquire another piece of land for future projects. Although land prices have risen steeply in Kelowna in recent years, we are confident we can meet this challenge.
